My 2025 top 9 🌱
It was difficult for me to even get around to doing this, to be honest, I wasn’t sure I was even going to post a top 9 because it’s been such an awful year but I’m glad I did. The simple exercise of making this top 9 allowed me to focus on the good bits:
- I worked through massive amounts of heartache and trauma and I did a lot of healing and even although it’s a work in progress, I’m a lot better at the end of this year than I was earlier on
- I got to work on books featuring elephants! 🐘 one of my favourite animals and one that holds a lot of meaning for different reasons
- I learned things in my art making practice that finally clicked and that felt like improvement
- I have been working on a new website and have made a lot of progress. I hoped to be done by now but it’s nearly there!
- I finally completed my sign language alphabet book and preparing to publish in 2026
- I have been working on a range of greeting cards, stationery and other goodies to finally get my online store up and running
- I had consistent unconditional love from my fur babies and they really helped me hang in there when I was inconsolable after losing Holly in July, and through all the other ups and downs
- I have art. When words fail, when I feel what ever I’m feeling, I always have art to help me crawl out of the trenches and because I know what art has done for me, I continue to share my art online, even if only 10 people see it and 3 people actually care, I hope it’s a little bit of good in someone’s day and that it can encourage creativity in anyone else’s life

My 2025 top 9 🌱

Top lessons I’ve learned as an illustrator in 2025 and will be taking with me into the new year 🌱
1. The people you work with are so important and should be aligned with who you are and what you do
2. Having a backup system for work and organised files can really save you in a pinch
3. Consistency matters so much more than perfection
4. You can do anything but not everything so focus on one thing at a time
5. You need to be your biggest fan, put yourself out there and advocate for your work

A train trip was the perfect choice for these little dassies adventure. Their lovely owl friend guided them down Table Mountain and saw them off once they were safely on the train. 💛
I based the train for this illustration off of the classic old yellow and grey trains I’ve seen most of my life in South Africa. I was a little nervous for all the train illustrations in this picture book because I haven’t illustrated a lot of trains or vehicles in general but I think I found the balance between realistic and not overly complicated for these.

Today was world mental health day and I had a day feeling just like this. It took up until this evening for me to draw anything but I’m glad I did. Art has always been a therapeutic outlet for me and the importance of art making for my mental health is a large part of what led me to studying art therapy and wanting to help others heal through art. It’s also why I love children’s books and want to make books that make a difference. As I sit with this piece I’m mindful of everyone who has or is feeling this way.

I’m so excited to finally share the cover of my upcoming picture book!!

This book has been a true labour of love, created to celebrate South African Sign Language, our 12th official language, and to make learning the alphabet fun and accessible.

Through fun illustrations and bright colours, and the inclusion of South African animals, my hope is that this book helps little ones (and grown-ups too!) take their first steps in learning SASL

✏️SASL was officially recognised as the 12th official language of South Africa in July 2023, giving Deaf South Africans full language rights.
✏️There are an estimated 4 million South Africans who are deaf or hard of hearing, and many use SASL as their primary language.
✏️SASL is not simply a version of English or Afrikaans—it’s a complete language with its own grammar, structure, and rich cultural heritage.
✏️The recognition of SASL is a step towards making education more inclusive and accessible for Deaf learners.
✏️By learning SASL, hearing South Africans can help bridge communication gaps and support greater inclusion in schools, workplaces, and communities.
✏️Research shows that learning sign language can boost memory, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
✏️Teaching children sign language at an early age encourages empathy, patience, and respect for diversity.
